Potato

  • Based on several hundred reference values, NIRS calibrations were developed to estimate protein, total phenolics and total and specific carotenoids (ß-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin, anteraxanthin) in freeze dried and milled potato tuber samples as well as in fresh tuber samples.
  • The developed calibrations for freeze dried and milled potato samples demonstrated good precision and can be used to select for genotypes with high, medium or low concentration of protein, total phenolics and total and specific carotenoids (Bonierbale et al. 2008). Existing NIRS calibrations will be extended every year by including 120 samples from different environments and characteristics.
  • The currently available NIRS calibrations for fresh tubers allows the prediction, with good accuracy, of protein, total carotenoids and total phenolics, but calibrations for specific carotenoids so far show too low precision. 
In 2008, more than 5,000 potato tuber samples from different projects have been analyzed by NIRS at CIP for protein, total and specific carotenoids (ß-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, violaxanthin, anteraxanthin) and total phenolics.
