Equipment

The International Potato Center's Quality and Nutrition Laboratory uses such cutting-edge technologies as spectrophotometer, HPLC, ICP and NIRS.


HPLC (High Performance Liquid Cromatography)
With this equipment it is possible to determine the concentration of nutritional antioxidants (individual carotenoids and polyphenols, as well as ascorbic acid). It is used to determine ß-carotene concentration in sweetpotato, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin in potato, and lutein, zeaxanthin, ß-criptoxanthin and ß-carotene in maize.


ICP-OES(Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry)
With this equipment it is possible to determine the concentration of minerals. It is used to determine iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and aluminum in poato, sweetpotato and other crops.


NIRS (Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy)
With this equipment it is possible to estimate the concentration of carotenoids, polyphenols and minerals. This is a fast and cheap method. It can estimate concentration of more than 200 samples per day. It is used to estimate individual carotenoids and polyphenols and minerals in potato, sweetpotato and other crops.


Freeze drier
This equipment is used to dry sweetpotato and potato samples without affecting the quality of the sample. With this equipment we can dry 500 samples of 50 g each per week. This equipment, together with the NIRS, is the perfect combination for making fast estimations of the total carotenoid and polyphenol in potatoes and sweetpotatoes.


Spectrophotometer
With this equipment it is possible to determine ascorbic acid and total carotenoid and polyphenol concentration.
