Few plant pathogens have received the attention that P. infestans has gotten and there is an enormous body of literature on this subject. Part of this information is reviewed in the section on General Information . What we will try to do here is make some specific links to laboratories that are actively working on the pathogen biology, initiatives, and other good sources of information.
The Fry lab. This is the home page of the laboratory of Dr. W. E. Fry at Cornell Universty. Bill and colleagues have worked for a long time on Pathogen Biology, epidemiology and many other aspects of potato and tomato late blight. A must stop for info on this disease.
The Judelson lab. Howard and his group are involved in a number of projects addressing the genomics of P. infestans, including work aimed at sequencing expressed sequence tags (ESTs), sequencing the P. infestans genome and using data to identify important genes and perform expression profiling (microarray) studies.
The Kamoun lab. Sophien and his group and others are now involved in a number of high throughput Phytophthora genomics projects, such as large scale EST sequencing of particular developmental and infection stages, BAC-end sequencing for the construction of BAC contigs, and targeted sequencing of corresponding contigs of particular interest. One objective of their research is to exploit the rapidly accumulating genomics data to identify novel elicitor proteins from Phytophthora.
The Phytopthora group headed by Francine Govers at Wageningen UR. Their research focuses on the biology and pathology of P. infestans, particularly on unravelling signal transduction pathways that underlie pathogenicity, thereby pinpointing targets for disease control, and identifying P. infestans elicitors of plant defence responses and assessment of their value for alternative disease control
SCRI Plant Pathogen Characterisation Phytophthora infestans genomeproject is a collaborative effort involving other groups. At SCRI, much of the research on P. infestans aims to integrate genetic, physical and transcriptional maps of the genome to facilitate rapid discovery of genes involved in pathogenicity, host-range and avirulence. These maps will be compared to those under construction elsewhere for related organisms to inform us about how these complex pathogens evolved
The Ristaino lab. Jean and her group are working on the molecular evolution of the Irish potato famine pathogen Phytophthora infestans, fungicide effects on a mating type locus and a Phyophthora infestans mitochondrial DNA sequencing project with TIGR
Vegetable Laboratory, ARS-USDA, Beltsville, MD Along with other activities, this group is developing rapid protocols to aid in identification of new, more virulent pathogen isolates, to monitor the origins and spread of disease, and to characterize pathogen variability. They are working to determine underlying disease resistance mechanisms in potato, and infection mechanisms and genetic variability in pathogens that can be used in developing and selecting potato germplasm resistant to P. infestans and Streptomyces scabies.
