This site is dedicated to potato varieties and advanced breeding materials developed by CIP
- Most of the potato materials shown here are adapted to short days of tropical and sub-tropical countries. Hence requesters from the long day temperate region should consider this when requesting materials
- What is TPS? This acronym stands for True Potato Seed, a seed technology that uses sexual seed instead of traditional tuber seed. TPS varieties developed by CIP are hybrids

AVAILABILITY OF POTATO MATERIAL
Potato materials are available in the following forms:
- In vitro plantlets: The plantlets are sent in test tubes with one plant per tube and two tubes per cultivar. Shipments are made in February and August of each year. We distribute a maximum of 30 cultivars as we have limited capacity to handle the many requests we receive worldwide.
- Mini-Tubers from CIP-Lima, Peru: These mini-tubers are produced from in vitro tested stocks and are usually sent in shipments of 5 or 10 tubers per clone. Tuber weight varies from 5 to 10 grams. Tubers of uniform size are sent when available. Clones are grown when Lima's climatic conditions permit tuberization. For this reason, requests must be received in October for dispatch to begin in August of the following year. Due to the increasing cost of producing mini-tubers, we prefer to distribute invitro plantlets
- True Seed: Also known as botanical or sexual seeds. True seed of TPS varieties is packed in hermetically sealed envelope containing usually 1,000 seeds
HEALTH OF AVAILABLE POTATO MATERIALS
CIP makes every effort to ensure the material is free from known pathogens and pests. A CIP Phytosanitary Statement and a Peruvian Phytosanitary Certificate are issued with each shipment listing the pathogens for which testing was done. All tuber material is produced in pots in quarantine screenhouses, using pathogen tested materials, and following plant testing procedures. Pathogen tested materials are utilized when producing TPS, in an isolated crossing block, seed samples are furher tested for sexually transmitted pathogens including PSTVd and PVT
HELP CIP HELP YOU
- Please provide climate data when you request the genetic material
- Let us know your best local variety(ies)
- Provide the expected planting date
- Share with CIP results of yields, selections, resistances, adaptation, etc. These data help CIP select better material in the future, as well as up-date our data base.
MATERIAL TRANSFER AGREEMENT (MTA)
Prior to sending the genetic material requested, we will send to the requesting Institution a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) whereby the recipient agrees not to claim ownership over the genetic material to be received, nor to seek intellectual property rights (IPR) over that genetic material or related information, among other conditions. The MTA is obtained at http://www.cipotato.org/org/mtas/mtas.htm
POLICY ON SHIPPING AND HANDLING COST
Due to the increasing shipping and handling costs, CIP applies a policy of cost recovery to individuals and companies of the private sector. Please write to CIP-ADU@[cgiar.org] if you need further information.
